More Upstream Traffic as Compared to Downstream Traffic

This graph plots the upstream (in blue) and the downstream (in green) data rates observed at a busy Aperto® sector, in a live network, over a 24 hour period. Note that the amount of upstream traffic generated is consistently more than the amount of downstream traffic, and there is no let-up, even during the middle of the night! The reason for this is that the system is being used to serve SME users as a replacement for T1/E1 or fractional T1/E1 services, and many of these subscribers use their link for putting Web servers on the Internet. Indeed, high bandwidth upstream transmission is one of the key benefits of a broadband wireless system as compared to cable or DSL, and this is something that operator’s sacrifice when they opt for polling or CSMA/CA based systems.

One of the key questions for operators when choosing their vendor is: How good is your upstream transport? Can you sustain a large number of users generating a lot of upstream traffic, with a high degree of statistical multiplexing? These are characteristics that the Aperto system excels at.
